Everyone experiencing a mental health crisis deserves a mental health response.
The cost of inadequate crisis care
1 in 5
people shot and killed by police since 2015 had a mental illness
2 million
times each year people with mental illness are booked into jails
48,000+
people died by suicide in 2021
What we need in every crisis response system
We have an opportunity to reimagine crisis response. Every
person in crisis deserves a system that meets them where they are, including:
- 24/7 crisis call centers (“someone to talk to”)
- Mobile crisis teams (“someone to respond”)
- Crisis stabilization options (“a safe place to go”)
A system that includes these components should be the standard of care for how we respond to people in crisis. Together,
we can ensure people are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
